In Retirement Playing Games

Chapter 4

Unfortunately, at the corner was his timer, he had roughly 25 minutes left until he's forced out the game. He rushed into the town, making his way into the centre of the city where the quest building was stationed.

Running in, he dashed up to the receptionist, standing there for a few seconds she gave him an odd gaze before nodding. A screen appeared in front of him, he smiled when he saw it because he now managed to get himself a new staff.

[Mission Complete: 5/5 Horned Spiders Killed]

[Rewards: 15 Exp Gained; Hardwood Beginning Staff]

Another two missions appeared in front of him.

[Mission: Kill 5 Sneaky Spiders]

[Location: Forest of Spiders]

[Rewards: 20 Exp, Better Magician's Cloak]

[Mission: Kill 5 Hardwood Spiders]

[Location: Forest of Spiders]

[Rewards: 20 Exp, Fancy Magician's Hat]

Jose looked at his two quests before realising that he might have already completed it. Deciding that it wasn't a bad idea to at least try, he walked back up to the receptionist and placed his hand on the desk.

The receptionist looked at Jose, slightly annoyed before shocked. Nodding silently she returned to what she was doing, reading a book. Jose was slightly unimpressed at the service; if he was able to complain he would. Fortunately, the receptionist did her job and two more mission complete screens appeared.

[Mission Complete: 5/5 Sneaky Spiders Killed]

[Rewards: 20 Exp, Better Magician's Cloak]

[Mission Complete: 5/5 Hardwood Spiders]

[Rewards: 20 Exp, Fancy Magician's Hat]

Jose was looking at the rewards and begun wondering as to whether or not he made the right decision in only claiming them now. Sure, if he went back to the town constantly and claimed them, he might even be a higher level. But with the current predicament he was in, it seems that waiting until he reached his maximum limit through monsters alone and claiming the missions afterwards was much better.

The exp bar on his character screen was slowly going up, close to reaching the next level he turned to the receptionist who nodded. Causing another three missions to appear in his missions tab, as for the completion of these, there wasn't a reason to find out whether or not he's already done them.

[Mission: Kill 5 Leaf Spiders]

[Location: Forest of Spiders]

[Rewards: 30 Exp, Magician's Running Shoes]

[Mission: Kill 5 Deadly Poisonous Spiders]

[Location: Forest of Spiders]

[Rewards: 30 Exp, Light-Blue Magician's s.h.i.+rt]

[Mission: Kill 10 Hardwood Spiders]

[Location: Forest of Spiders]

[Rewards: 30 Exp, Fancy Magician's Gla.s.ses]

Jose was slightly annoyed at the sight of one of the rewards, but in the end, it made sense that the Magician's Running Shoes could be acquired through missions. Fortunately, he managed to acquire it much earlier through his hard efforts.

Jose didn't leave the desk and stood their idling for a few moments before realising the receptionist hadn't noticed he was here to claim more mission. Turning his attention back to the receptionist he placed a hand on the desk in front of her, gaining her attention immediately.

Her eyebrows furrowed when she noticed that Jose still hadn't left but looking at a screen in front of her she realised why that was. Her understanding of Jose was slowly drifting further and further from the norm; usually, people come to claim their rewards the moment they complete them, not wait until they do multiple. Not to mention, Jose would have no clue as to what the next mission was, meaning he just went on a slaughtering spree.

Sighing deeply she nodded once again at Jose, causing his screen to be filled with mission completes. She immediately gave Jose the next set of missions and waited patiently for him to claim them. But in the corner of her eyes, there was a flas.h.i.+ng icon.

Her expression changed to that of worry as she looked towards Jose. She waved her hand in the air, causing all the previous missions she gave Jose to disappeared. Instead, they were replaced by one single mission, an emergency one that was written in red letters.

[Emergency Mission: Protect the Town of Beginnings from the spider horde]

[Location: Town of Beginnings' Wall]

[Rewards: 100 Exp, 5 Stat Points, 1 Skill Point]

Jose was busy admiring his currently earning to notice the new mission. He swiftly opened up his equipment menu, replacing all his current equipment with the new ones. Bringing him up a few levels in terms of looks. His dark black hair matched the black magician's hat, not to mention the gla.s.ses were thin. His cloak was replaced by a much newer,

His previous s.h.i.+rt, which was made of rags was now a much more formal and scholar-like light-blue s.h.i.+rt. His physique and neatly trimmed features made him look like a high-end scholar; granted scholars don't research nor use magic.

His new character screen was rather impressive, or at least that's what Jose thought about it.

Jose decided to save his stat points for a little bit, he should be able to take on those giant spiders easily now with his current stats and equipment. h.e.l.l, he might even be the strongest in his Town of Beginnings as of now, at least with the cla.s.s apprentice magician.

Unlike most magicians who will join parties to keep themselves protected, he went solo, enabling him to keep all the experience to himself rather than share it with a large party. Of course, Jose could think of a mult.i.tude of methods to work one's way around that setback; granted, the one in charge needed to have complete control over the ones they would be doing it with.

"Ahm!" The receptionist sounded loudly; interrupting Jose's train of thought. Her eyes, glaring at Jose with annoyance as she nodded her head slowly and silently. To Jose, the receptionist at the moment reminded him of his woman leader; she was stern and smart.

Finally looking back towards his missions he realised what was happening. His expression changed to wonder; although he didn't have much gaming experience, he knew that it would be quite reckless to create a monster horde so early into the game.

But he didn't mind, rather, he saw this as an opportunity to gain a lot of levels. So without wasting any more time Jose sprinted out of the mission hall, leaving the receptionist to stare at his fleeting figure before sighing heavily and resuming her reading.

Jose weaved through the players, finally making his way to the edge of the town where the players were all gathering. There, he could see several dozen parties, all consisting of 5 – 10 players. Mainly due to 10 players being the max for a party.

He ran towards the gate and looked outside, his eyes widened with surprise when he saw the number of monsters gathered. The spiders filled the trees and ground with their creepy bodies, their dark red eyes stared at him through the smog. He felt a tug on his cloak as he was pulled back.

Turning around he saw a big, bulky player staring at him. The player's eyes were sharp, his hair was short and spiked upwards, creating a blonde wave. His stature was at least 6'7, towering over almost all players around them. His character decked out in metal armour, attached to his arm was a s.h.i.+eld that just about covered his entire body.

"Hey, what are you doing? Are you trying to initiate the attack?" The player asked with a deep, stern voice. He sounded rough and coa.r.s.e, but it also sounded powerful.

"No, I was just trying to get a look at what's surrounding us," Jose explained himself casually without backing down. His physique allowed him to do so, as he stood somewhat face to face with the behemoth of a character. "And what do you mean initiate the attack? Who's the one trying to organise something so bizarre with a bunch of players who are likely strangers?"

"Ha, you're looking at him," The player said in a serious tone, leaning over slightly, getting closer to Jose's face. "I'm currently the number one player in this town, reaching level 3 while the rest of my party members are level 2. I think I've got the qualifications to lead such an event."

Jose finally realised how serious of a setback creating parties was. As behind the bulky tank, there were 9 other players, looking rather arrogant and proud with their accomplishment. In the tank's team, there were 3 girls and 6 guys: 3 Archers, 2 Magicians, 2 Swordsman, 1 a.s.sa.s.sin, and 1 Tank. "Alright sure, so why was their emergency mission made? It couldn't be that the developers decided to try and kill as many beginner players as possible right?"

The tank chuckled. "Of course not; rather, this mission was created due to the efforts of a monster trainer."

Jose raised an eyebrow at the term. "And a monster training is?"

"Come on, you don't even know that," One of the magician's remarked with a c.o.c.ky tone, his posture and facial expression looked down at Jose. "A monster trainer is someone who aggravates a large number of monsters and leads them to other players, towns and cities being their favourite spot. They're basically player killers without actually killing any players."

"Suppose you're rather new considering you don't even know the term monster trainer I'm going to a.s.sume you weren't the one to cause this," The tank said confidently. "My instincts never lie, and although you're slightly arrogant you aren't a liar, that's what my guts are telling me."

"You're lucky, our leader's guts never lie!" The male swordsman shouted loudly from behind, making sure not just Jose, but anyone in the surroundings heard as well. The tank turned his head and stared at the player, silencing him without saying anything.

"That's what you get for speaking out a line," A female archer whispered to the swordsman. Unfortunately, she wasn't quiet enough and could be heard by just about all the people currently there. Her face turned red when she realised that and regained her composure.

"Anyway, I'm currently organising an attack, I'm getting the numbers for every cla.s.s so I can accurately create a formation to minimalize the number of deaths. Anyway, from your clothes I'm guessing you're a magician, hopefully, you can stick to the place once I create it," The tank explained in a serious and deep tone. "Also, the name's Blitz, make sure to engrain this meeting into your memory; that way, you can boost about starting in the same town as me once I reach the top."

Blitz and his team left Jose alone after that. Jose immediately went back to the gate and looked through, this time, actually getting a closer look at the spiders there. He noticed some familiar ones, mostly due to him killing them during his killing spree.

But at the back, he noticed some he didn't think would be here; they were the giant spiders, reaching player's waists in height with a length and width of 1 metre. They were at the back of the horde of spiders, standing on the ground patiently as they stared at the walls.

Jose noticed that his missions went up by one. Clicking on it a new mission appeared along with the emergency mission.
