Unbreak Me

Chapter 68

I stood there like a fool.

His room had clearly been renovated because it sure wasn't someplace one imagined a bachelor to live. A pathway of calla lilies led up to the gigantic bed, cream-coloured silk bedsheets spread out. The false ceiling was a stark contrast against the gold-plated spotlights and the room was so huge, I could take a car ride inside.

On the far end was the bathroom's door. I had a feeling I would need to vanish into it very soon. Mostly to have a calming talk with myself.

"Oh, I almost forgot," Zayn reached out into the back pocket of his pants and pulled out a little square I recognized all too much. "You left this in your room. I thought you might need it."

I had stopped breathing. My diary. No.

I reached out to s.n.a.t.c.h it from him but he pulled it up into the air, far from my reach. I stretched up on tippy toes and tried to get it but he kept flailing his arms around, laughing.

"Zayn," My voice wavered. "Give that back to me."

His eyes crinkled in amus.e.m.e.nt, lifting the diary further up into the air and opening it, trying to read what it said from a great distance. It was very small and my writing was even smaller so I didn't fear him reading it. But he could anytime soon.

"I am serious,

He smirked. "Have you written girly thoughts about me? Perhaps something about my thighs?"

I didn't smile. I didn't even twitch a muscle. "Give it back,"

His eyes narrowed at me. "You've just made me more curious, Leia. What could be so—?" He trailed off and the grin fell right off his face.

"Zayn, just return it please," I was begging. I didn't care. He just couldn't read it. He couldn't.

But something told me he already had.

And when he brought down the diary, away from my reach, my fear was confirmed.

"Leia," he choked. "What is this?"

"Zayn," Tears were streaking down my face. "Please."

There was no point now. Not when he'd read it.

"Is this true?" he wouldn't—he wouldn't even meet my eyes. "Is this true, Leia?"

I stepped closer to him, trying to touch him but he flinched back. "You have to hear me out. You have to—"

"Tell me!" He roared and my body shook uncontrollably. "IS THIS FREAKING TRUE?"

I sobbed, but my head shook into a nod. "Yes, but—"

"Yes," he repeated, eyes on the floor, brows knotted. "It's true. This was a lie. It was all a lie." Our gazes finally met and I hated the tears in his eyes, hated the pain he felt.

I touched his arm but he ripped it away from me. "Zayn," I wept. "Please listen to me. Hear me out."

"You wanted to win the bet," he huffed painfully and a tear rolled past his cheek. It felt like I had died and I would never feel what it was like to live. "You wanted to make me fall in love with you and then leave me."

"It wasn't supposed to—"

"NO," He shouted into my face. "Don't you dare say anything. You married me to win a d.a.m.ned bet? My heart—Leia, my heart. I can't—I can't breathe. I need to..." He opened the door and walked out.

I called out his name, running after him but I slammed into someone on the way and when I looked up to apologize, everything inside me froze. "Mummy?
